Cornwall Manor is a non-profit, continuing care retirement community in Cornwall, Pennsylvania, a small town (population 3,500) centrally located between Harrisburg and Lancaster.  Originally established as a home for retired United Methodist Church clergy in 1949, this community provides housing and health care in a "caring, Christian environment."  Situated on 190 leafy acres of an estate that once belonged to an iron-magnate, Cornwall Manor has a lovely, rural campus and boasts several historic buildings that date from the 18th and 19th centuries.  In fact, seven apartments are housed in a building dating from 1773.   More below....

Five hundred seniors call Cornwall Manor home, and the minimum age for residency is 65 years.  There are 71 individual homes and 195 apartments for independent living, 31 assisted living units and 121 skilled nursing beds.  Independent living apartments are furnished and range from efficiencies to two bedroom units; entrance fees for these range from $18,000 to $208,000.   Monthly fees for single-occupancy are from $1,088 to $2,182 and include maintenance, housekeeping and utilities (except telephone and cable).  Extra person fees are $208 to $455 per month depending on the size of the unit.  Meals may or may not be included.  

The single family homes are ranch-style with 2 to 3 bedrooms; entrance fees for these range from $73,000 to $237,000 depending on size and amenities (at this writing there were no single family homes available).    Monthly fees for single-family homes are from $1,406 to $1,877 per month.  The additional person monthly fee is $145.

The Woods is an up and coming 100-acre expansion adjacent to the current campus and will have 188 houses, built over the next 8 years, in various neighborhoods.  These will be single family homes and duplexes, with 1,400 to 1,800 square feet, and attached garages.  Entrance fees will be $204,000 and up, and monthly fees will range from $1,877 for single occupancy to $2,022 for double occupancy.  Call 800-222-2476 for information.

All residents in the independent living units have access to Cornwall's on-site medical clinic.  Doctors have weekday office hours and are on-call 24 hours a day.   A nurse resides on campus, and the pharmacy is open six days a week.  Transportation to off-campus medical appointments is available, and all units have a 24-hour emergency call system.  Home health care services are available on an as-needed basis.   Good Samaritan Hospital is 5 miles away.

Cornwall also offers assisted-living (professional personal care).  There is no entrance fee for these units, and monthly fees are from $92 to $134 per day for single occupancy, depending on the size of the apartment.   Double occupancy ranges from $173 to $181 per day.  Utilities, except phone and cable, are included.

Nursing care is also available and costs $196 per day for a semi-private room or $215 per day for a private room.  Dementia care costs $202 per day for a semi-private room or $221 per day for a private room.  Three meals a day are included.   Cornwall Manor is Medicare and Medicaid.

Amenities include a heated indoor swimming pool, a whirlpool spa, a putting green, a fitness center, a billiards area, wooded walking trails and extensive activities that include educational and cultural events, an on-site banking center, guest accommodations, a beauty shop, an art studio, pastoral care, dining services, a greenhouse, transportation services, a library, gift shops, a convenience store and a concert series featuring professional artists.  The Cornwall Children's Center just across the street offers a program designed to promote interaction between residents and children through various activities.  Bocce Ball is one of the most popular activities here, and recently the State Attorney General visited to promote a state-wide initiative to protect seniors from identity theft.

Cornwall is in mission with the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church and is open to people of any color, race, sex, national origin, disability or religious creed.  It is accredited by the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC).
